The initiative also encourages students to follow a career in these fields and in the space domain.

As part of ESERO’s work, the European Space Agency (ESA) is inviting teachers to a summer workshop in the Netherlands at the end of June.

The ESA’s Directorate of Human Spaceflight has been using the International Space Station as a “classroom in space” for many educational events, and has produced educational material for teachers and science educators.

The space station will continue in orbit till at least 2020, and as its focus shifts from construction to routine operation the educational possibilities will become even stronger in years to come.

Summer workshop series

The first of the summer workshops for teachers will be held at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in the Netherlands from 28 to 30 June.

Secondary teachers from ESA Member States including Ireland and the UK are eligible to apply.

Places are limited, and interested teachers will need to fill in an application form and send a short testimonial on why they would make a suitable candidate for the workshop.

The deadline for registration is 1 June and the successful candidates will be informed by 4 June.
