International Mathematical Olympiad logoAn Irish Leaving Certificate student has received an Honorary Mention at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Argentina.

Jonathan Peters from Presentation Brothers College, Cork, was one of six students in Team Ireland at what is often referred to as the Olympics of pre-university mathematics. Over 500 students took part, spending two days immersed in complex maths problems.

“Getting the Honourable Mention was the kind of dream which seemed just out of reach,” Jonathan recalls. “I seem to remember hopping up and down in a very immature way, much like I did when I first got the call that I had made the team.”

In the run-up to the prestigious competition he trained at UCC’s Mathematics Enrichment Programme.  He also did exceptionally well in his Leaving Certificate examinations and hopes to study Maths Science at UCC.
