Primary school children in Northern Ireland have been learning what it’s like to be microbiologists for a day in an initiative in which scientists from Queen’s University Belfast visit their schools.
The experts from the university’s School of Biological Sciences and the Society for General Microbiology have been providing one-day science workshops for the pupils in St Colmcille’s Primary School in Ballymena and the Friends’ Preparatory School in Lisburn.
Experiments
The scientists showed practical ways to learn about microbiology and its role in everyday lives. The classroom experiments included a look at the role of yeast in the production of bread and the importance of hand washing in preventing the spread of diseases.
