Videos give advice on science careers

Discover Science & Engineering has partnered with CareersPortal.ie to offer careers advice for anyone interested in a science, engineering or ICT career.

Some video interviews with people working in these fields are now available online, including:

  • Máiréad Breathnach, a technology development scientist at Technology From Ideas and DSE Science Ambassador. Máiréad followed her love of maths from a young age and completed a BSc in Applied Physics at the University of Limerick, then did a PhD in a similar area.   • Shane Callanan, an electronic engineer with Excelsys Technologies. Shane studied engineering at the Cork Institute of Technology, and is now in charge of the Applications Engineering group at Excelsys, specialising in the area of power supplies. View Shane Callanan’s video on CareersPortal.ie
  • Caitriona Jackman, planetary scientist and DSE Science Ambassador. Caitriona went to secondary school at Crescent College Comprehensive in Limerick. From there, she did a degree in Applied Physics at the University of Limerick, then completed a PhD in Planetary Science. She now works as a postdoctoral researcher at Imperial College London.   • Sinead Kenny, a design engineer in the Medical Device Sector of Creganna in Galway. Sinead took a degree in Material Science at the University of Limerick, and was then awarded a PhD in Biomedical Cements. View Sinead Kenny’s video on CareersPortal.ie
  • Brian Macken, a science communicator who works on the Science Bus. Brian studied Theoretical Physics and Computer Science in NUI Maynooth, then did a Masters in Science Communication at DCU.   • Brian O’Connor, an analytical chemist at Wyeth. Brian went to college in Tennessee and the University of California Riverside, where he completed his Masters of Science in Analytical Chemistry.   • Karl Stanley, software engineer and DSE Science Ambassador. After his Leaving Cert, Karl took a degree in Mathematics at TCD, then completed an MSc in Computer Science. He now works as a software engineer with Ticket-text.com. View Karl Stanley’s video on My Science Career
  • James Stewart, who manages the design and delivery of workshops, shows and events at W5 in Belfast.
