Train as an astronaut in WoW contest

Published 3 February 2009

A great family trip to the European Space Agency is the top prize in this year’s “Engineered! A Week of Wonder” festival.

By the end of the trip to the Space Expo in the Netherlands, the winner of this year’s competition will be a “space expert”. The winner and three guests will get the chance to wear a space suit and:

  • Understand and perform some of the training the astronauts must go through before they leave for a space mission
  • Experience how astronauts live and work in space
  • Explore the world of satellites with test models of European space missions
  • Experience the simulated launch of an Ariane rocket
  • Discover what it was like for the first astronaut on the Moon

The prize for four people includes travel, two nights’ B&B accommodation, and entrance to Space Expo in Noordwijk, The Netherlands.

Space Expo is Europe’s first permanent space exhibition, and is the visitors’ centre for the European Space Agency’s largest technical establishment.
Engineering fun

The “Engineered! A Week of Wonder” programme is part of Engineers Week 2009, a series of nationwide events celebrating engineering in Ireland. This year’s programme runs from 9-13 February.

Last year’s events were a great success, with over 12,500 people taking part, and this year’s festival is expected to be bigger than ever.

Among this year’s events are treasure hunts in Cork and Dublin. Participants will follow a trail around engineering feats in each city, putting their imagination and creativity to the test by completing questions and interactive activities as they go.

Each treasure hunter will receive a STEPS to Engineering certificate and special goodies – and if you take part in any “Engineered! A Week of Wonder” event you will also be entered in the Space Expo competition.
