“Exploring the Universe: A tale of telescopes, time travel and extra-terrestrials” is the title of a talk at UCD by astrophysicist Dr Andrew Newsam.

He will be giving the lecture at UCD’s Science Hub on 10 June, as part of the celebrations marking International Year of Astronomy 2009. The talk is suitable for Transition Year, fifth and sixth-year secondary school students.

Dr Newsam, who is based at Liverpool John Moores University, specialises in turning sets of astronomical data into a collection of useful numbers that can be used for doing science.

He is also Director of the National Schools Observatory, a project aimed at giving schoolchildren the opportunity to make their own observations alongside professional astronomers on top-quality telescopes.

His talk takes place at 11am on Wednesday 10 June in Theatre A of the Science Hub in Belfield. Admission is free but pre-booking is essential by emailing orla[dot]donoghue[at]ucd[dot]ie
