Over 1,000 students across Europe took part in the first year of Xperimania last year, and even more are expected this
year.
Xperimania is an educational project for secondary school students, in which you and your teachers explore the world of materials in a fun and easy scientific way. The aim is to raise awareness of modern materials and the chemical processes used to develop them.
This year, Xperimania concentrates on the properties of familiar objects and the role of petrochemistry in their manufacture.
The “Check out the property!” competition involves investigating a physical or chemical property in a familiar object, identifying other materials with similar properties, and finding out more about its use in everyday life.
Xperimania will also give you the chance to take part in multilingual online chats with industry experts on specific topics throughout the school year.
The benefits
Taking part in Xperimania will help you to:
- Understand the wide variety of materials used in everyday life and what goes into them
- Devise your own chemistry and physics experiments to explore materials and their properties
- Understand the properties which make specific materials practical and indispensable
- Explore the world scientifically
The Xperimania project is coordinated by European Schoolnet on behalf of the Association of Petrochemicals Producers in Europe (APPE), the representative body of the European petrochemical industry.
European Schoolnet (www.europeanschoolnet.org) is a not-for-profit consortium of 31 Departments of Education across Europe. Its Irish member is Scoilnet.ie
