Smart Futures is a campaign to engage with students, teachers, guidance counsellors, parents and the wider community in Ireland about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
The campaign highlights the vast number of employment opportunities in Ireland’s STEM sectors today, and it aims to stimulate an interest in STEM career options and influence subject choices at second and third level.
Those supporting the campaign include the Irish Medical Devices Association, ICT Ireland, the Irish Software Association and Engineers Ireland’s STEPS programme, with the support of Discover Science & Engineering (DSE).
Talking to people in STEM careers
This year’s second Smart Futures STEM online careers week kicks off today (22 October), with companies answering questions from students and guidance counsellors about careers and jobs in the medical devices sector in Ireland.
There will be further question-and-answer sessions throughout the week with panels from the games industry (including app development), the energy sector and cybersecurity (including computer forensics).
Q&A sessions from the previous online STEM Careers Week in January 2012 about careers and jobs in the ICT sector are also available on the Smart Futures website. The questions from students and teachers were answered by people working in HP, Microsoft, Ericsson, SAP, Xilinx, Openet, Cisco and CPL Recruitment.
