This is the third year of the annual summer Space Camp. It’s aimed at children aged 8 to 12 who have space-related interests – and who might even hope to become an astronaut and explore space one day.

“Since starting these workshops three years ago following the opening of Blackrock Castle Observatory, we have noticed an increasing interest in all things space from the public at large but in particular from children.

“The aim of Space Camp is to encourage and foster that interest in younger people and show how all things astronomical impact on our daily lives.”

- Space Camp’s co-ordinator, Frances McCarthy

Science workshops

Each day’s workshop will explore space themes such as “Astronauts and Moon Landings” and “Comets and Craters”. Besides finding out about life as an astronaut, the solar system and the search for alien life, the biggest highlight of the week is the final workshop. This involves assembling your own rocket and watching it fly.

The six week-long sessions take place either in the morning (10am to 12.30pm) or afternoon (2 to 4.30pm) on the following dates:

  • 5-9 July
  • 19-23 July
  • 9-13 August

Admission per budding astronaut is €95. Find out more about Space Camp 2010 on BCO.ie
