“Follow the Fleet” is an online project in which primary schoolchildren can follow merchant ships around the world
thanks to satellite tracking.
The children also learn more about the maritime world, and receive email bulletins from the captains on the vessels. image of Follow the Fleet map
The website, at FollowTheFleet.ie, has been featured recently on RTÉ’s Nationwide programme.
The project is designed to be used as a teaching aid and is targeted at seven to 10-year-olds learning geography, history, science and environmental studies in the Social, Environmental and Scientific Education (SESE) curriculum.
Adopt a ship
“Follow the Fleet” allows pupils to adopt a ship and follow it through an exciting journey on its trade routes around the world.
The children learn about day-to-day life at sea, ships’ crews and equipment, commercial trade by sea, and Ireland’s maritime history.
The project is organised by the Irish Maritime Development Office (IMDO) as part of its outreach programme for children.
The IMDO is the national development, promotional and marketing agency for the shipping services sector, and is part of the Marine Institute.
