Europe is currently building the world’s biggest telescope, and the man behind this incredible endeavour is visiting Ireland to give Astronomy Ireland’s Christmas Lecture.
Tim de Zeeuw, Director General of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), will give the presentation on 14 December in Trinity College Dublin at 8pm.

The facilities at ESO are the envy of scientists worldwide. Its telescopes have discovered supermassive black holes, Earth-like planets, and the most distant explosions in the Universe.
Professor de Zeeuw will also talk about the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA).
This will be the largest ground-based astronomy project in existence. Construction began in 2003 and it will start scientific observations in 2011.
How to book
Tickets are €7 (€5 for Astronomy Ireland members) – book online from Astronomy Ireland.
The lecture will also be available from Astronomy Ireland on DVD, so you will still be able to learn more about this exciting project even if you can’t make it on the night.
