Cork company to develop tools for astronauts

Radisens Diagnostics, a company that designs and manufactures diagnostic instruments, has been chosen by the European Space Agency to develop a range of tools for astronauts to monitor their health.

The Cork-based firm was awarded a contract worth €1 million to develop a device that allows astronauts on the International Space Station and other human spaceflights to test blood and produce instant laboratory-standard results.

The technology can also be used by doctors to check for health conditions like diabetes as well as thyroid, liver and kidney problems with a quick finger-prick blood test. This would eliminate the need to send blood samples to a laboratory, with the delay this involves.
