Greenwave, the online mass experiment aimed at primary school pupils, has won the eGovernment award at this year’s Irish Internet Association’s Net Visionary Awards.
Funded and managed by Discover Science & Engineering (DSE), Greenwave allows pupils to record how plants and animals react to longer days and to track seasonal changes on the website.
Specifically, it allows schools to trace whether the “green wave” of spring moves from south to north across Ireland or inland from the coast to the centre of the country. Participating schools log their sightings of frogspawn, ash and swallows, for instance, on the Greenwave site.
Greenwave, and the site’s web developer Xwerx, emerged as the winner from a shortlist that included State-funded websites to promote tourism careers, motor tax services and the driving test. Nominations to the award scheme are made by members of the public.
