Ireland’s new research centre for the study of financial mathematics and economics has been announced during National Maths Week.
The Financial Mathematics and Computational Cluster (FMC2) brings together experts in financial mathematics, financial economics and computer science. They will conduct advanced research – mainly based on computers – into financial mathematics and economics.
The results of this work will feed into the large number of companies involved in the Irish Financial Services Centre (IFSC), and the researchers will also develop new software tools for the sector.
The research centre will also boost jobs in financial mathematics. It will provide a steady stream of highly qualified personnel (post doctoral researchers and PhD graduates) for the financial services sector.
Economic importance
The IFSC in Dublin’s docklands is very important for Ireland’s economy. It employs more than 25,000 people, and produces annual exports worth €22 billion – over a third of all service exports.
Science Foundation Ireland is funding the €4.7 million centre, which joins a number of other strategic research “clusters” that bring together research partners from universities and the private sector.
The impressive list of partners at FMC2 includes:
- University College Dublin
- Dublin City University
- NUI Maynooth
- University of Ulster
- University of California Los Angeles
- Columbia University
- Technical University of Kaiserslautern in Germany
- The Federal Reserve Bank of New York
- Pioneer Investments
- Ryan Capital
- The Institute of Bankers in Ireland
