First Fascination of Plants Day to be held next year

The European Plant Science Organisation will hold Logo for Fascination of Plants Day 2012 eventthe inaugural Fascination of Plants Day on 18 May, 2012.

The global event is designed to highlight the complexity of plants and how vital they are to human survival.

Scientists estimate that there 250,000 species of plants on the Earth and their capacity to produce sugars from sunlight has enabled them to adapt and survive in a wide variety of environments. Plants play a huge role in our daily lives, providing the basis of many of our foods, medicines, chemicals and energy.

More than 25 countries and 60 universities will take part in the celebration and members of the public are invited to contribute by contacting Ireland’s nation organiser, Dr Zoë Popper of NUI Galway.
