Design your own submarine

Published 29 October 2009

Your design for a futuristic submarine could be in with a chance to win a great prize.

Atlantaquaria, the National Aquarium of Ireland in Galway, is running the competition for budding young submarine designers.

The winning designs will be shown as part of the Annual Sunday Fun Day at the aquarium on Sunday 8 November, which is being organised as part of Science Week 2009.

Plan your design

Your submarine should be designed for scientists to explore Ireland’s 220 million acres of underwater territory. Among other things, your plan should include:

  • A sketch of the outside of the sub, including the periscope, propeller, porthole and other clever features to be used by the explorers while under the sea
  • The plan of the inside of the sub, showing the control room, sleeping area, kitchen, bathroom, hospital and any special rooms

Entries must be submitted to the Galway Atlantaquaria by the family fun day on Sunday 8 November, and don’t forget to include the name of your submarine with your design.

Science fun day

The fun day will explore some of the many links between science and the sea, from the invention of the submarine to scuba diving, and the invention of the radio.

Activities will also include cartoon drawing classes, face painting and storytelling.
