Brain Awareness Week celebrates an Irish first

Published 27 February 2009

Among the many events across the country during this year’s Brain Awareness Week 2009 is a celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Robert Bentley Todd.

This Dublin-born doctor played a key role in developing a modern understanding of epilepsy. Among his other scientific firsts, he was the first to lay down definite principles for the treatment of serious cases of fever, and pioneered research and treatment of various forms of delirium.
Nursing standards

Todd also did much to improve the standards of hospital nursing, and played a key role in the development of King’s College Hospital in London.

A seminar about his life and work will be held in the Science Gallery, Trinity College Dublin, from 11 am to 1 pm on Thursday 12 March. It is being organised by Brainwave, the Irish Epilepsy Association.
