Since 2008 the Atlantic Corridor development agency has held an annual national conference exploring the promotion of STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) in education.
Speakers at the 2012 conference include Leena Gade (chief racing and test engineer with Audi Sports), Ward Van Duffel (managing director of LEGO Education Europe), John Hennessy (chairman of the Higher Education Authority and chairman of LM Ericsson) and Tony Hill (director of the Manchester Museum of Industry and Science).
The keynote speaker is “Sesame Street” producer Carol Lynn Parente. The winner of 11 Emmy Awards, she will be talking about the TV show’s pioneering work in bringing STEM education to young audiences.
The conference will also include a workshop for 120 second-level students on their attitudes to science and technology and the announcement of the winners of the first National School Science Competition.
Atlantic Corridor works to develop cross-border and international links for a variety of business, education and development projects. It is funded by Department of Foreign Affairs and focussed particularly on the development of mechanisms to share best practice from partner regions in Ireland and North America.
