atlantic-conferenceThe key theme of the Atlantic Conference 2010 is “how can educators inspire students to engage with science, technology, engineering and maths?”

Speakers for the conference in Tullamore, Co Offaly, next February include:

  • Dr John Mighton from University of Toronto
  • Dr Chris Horn, technology entrepreneur and President of Engineers Ireland
  • Jeff Evans, Georgia Tech Research Institute
  • Dr Michael John Gorman, director of the Science Gallery, Dublin

As well as being a mathematician and expert on maths literacy, John Mighton is also well-known as a playwright. His works include “Possible Worlds”, “The Little Years” and “Body and Soul”. He also advised Gus Van Sant, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck on the script for the Oscar-winning movie “Good Will Hunting”.

The conference brings together scientists, educators and business people from Ireland and North America to discuss issues surrounding the development and promotion of science, technology, engineering and maths education.

Skills issue

Telecoms company Ericsson is the lead sponsor for next year’s event. John Hennessy, Managing Director of Ericsson in Ireland, said: “It is vital that we cooperate to find new solutions and approaches to the STEM [science, technology, engineering and maths] skills issue, which is vital for our economic development in Ireland.

“Skills in science, technology, engineering and maths are becoming increasingly important in the knowledge economy in Ireland and Ericsson as a long-standing knowledge-intensive employer in Ireland is keen to support this initiative.”
