STEREO: sounds of the Sun

Date: 1 January 1970 Location: Science Gallery, Dublin Admission: Free (pre-booking essential - suggested donation €5)

Trinity College Dublin is hosting the STEREO Science Working Group 21 convention from 22-26 March 2010.

STEREO is the Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory, an innovative NASA mission to study how large solar storms influence our life on earth.

As part of the convention, two of the world’s leading female solar scientists will give public lectures in the Science Gallery.

Dr Janet Luhmann is a Research Geophysicist at the Space Science Laboratory at UC Berkeley, STEREO/IMPACT Principal Investigator and leader of the development of the STEREO project.

During her talk Dr Luhmann will explain how sonification is used to interpret sequences of images of the sun as sound, and how this helps in understanding the data.

The process, known as sonification, is a fascinating insight into the mechanisms of sound.
