As part of Science Week 2016 which runs from the 13th to the 20th of November, Science Foundation Ireland has announced a range of exciting events with some already selling fast! Dara O’Briain will kick off the start of Science Week with a bang when he hosts Scintillating Science at the National Concert Hall on Monday 14th of November. Dara along with a panel of guests will discuss why our brains love to win and what it takes to travel into outer space.
For those with a sports interest, Peak Performance – The Science Behind Sporting Success takes place in Royal Hospital Kilmainham on Thursday 17th of November. The panel on the night will include Roscommon footballer and strength and conditioning coach with Connaught GAA, Cathal Cregg; Olympic 4x400 Relay Competitor, Jessie Barr; Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Physiology DCU, Brendan Egan; Performance Nutritionist to Leinster Rugby and Dublin Senior Football, Daniel Davey; and Consultant Anaesthetist and Caudwell Xtreme Everest Research Expedition participant, Roger McMorrow. Together they will look at some of the factors that contribute to an athlete’s performance such as the role nutrition plays, why a winning mentality is so important, the long term effects of elite sports and not least how athlete’s bodies react to extreme environments.
The Science of Bubbleology with Scientific Sue also takes place on Thursday 17th of November, is sure to be a treat for adults and children alike. Sue McGrath, aka Scientific Sue will explain the science of bubbles while conducting fun family friendly experiments for everyone to get involved in.
More than 800 events will take place across Ireland as part of Science Week between the 13th and the 20th of November 2016, from the science of coffee, to foraging and fermentation or the chemistry of cooking there is something for all ages.
